🤨 How do you find your “voice” when writing?
Finding your voice is an ever-evolving process. Your experiences, beliefs, and perspectives influence all of your communications, including your storytelling.
Your voice is as unique as your fingerprints and DNA. It's what makes your writing distinct. Embrace your quirks and idiosyncrasies. Experiment with tone, subtext, and point of view.
Read and write regularly. Pay attention to the types of writing you gravitate to and what stimulates your mind and muse.
Consider freewriting on a weekly basis to stimulate your imagination and fine-tune your natural and authentic style. (Use our Wednesday Writing Prompts for inspiration.)
Stay faithful to the stories in your head. — Paula Hawkins
Practice, practice, practice. The more you write and experiment with varying tones, genres, and subjects, you’ll be able to identify and strengthen your unique storytelling ability.
Many writers start out trying to mimic their favorite authors. There’s nothing wrong with that. The reason you’re drawn to a particular author’s style is because it resonates with you. Practice writing like them is a good way to fine-tune that style so it’s more you and less them.
Once you’ve found your *voice*, what makes your storytelling unique, it’s okay to play with. Over time, it will change and grow, like you do. Trust it, refine it, and enjoy it. Be true to the words inside you, and tune in to what makes your writing distinctive and noteworthy.
